Ganahl was upset with TV forecasters missing the weather for snow days at school. At the age of 17, before beginning college, Jym stepped into a TV station in Iowa and notified them he could do this job better. They hired him for 6 nights a week during his college years at the Campus of Northern Iowa and 52 years later he loves being able to continue his hobby, not a job, with WSYX/FOX28.

Jym retired on his 50th anniversary of doing weather but was so bored and depressed for the year after he only knew he had to do it again. Nearly  70, He still feels 17 getting weather folklore and knowledge to everyone. Jym correspondingly was in the Army after college and was named the Most Outstanding Scout and #1 Marksman with an M-16 rifle, reached the Spirit and Honor Medal and then was placed in flight operations with a helicopter unit with the National Guard.

Jym was acknowledged into the Associated Press Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2009. During the 1980s, Jym prepared 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade science and math at St Agatha School in Upper Arlington, then taught 9 summers with the OWjL program at Ohio Wesleyan Campus. Jym treasures theater and spent 19 summers acting in the outdoor drama TECUMSEH, and he is currently with the comedy rock and roll theater Shadowbox Live where he has been in 22 shows.
