Brittany Hope Thyroid Cancer
Brittany was raised up playing basketball, beginning to play at the age of 8. While on the court in eighth grade, she detected her teammates couldn’t hear her when she would shout at them during games. She persisted in losing her voice, especially concerning an outgoing, middle-school girl whose voice permitted her to join with friends, family, and teammates. Deciding to figure out why she was losing her voice, Brittany visited a series of doctors. It wasn’t until her vocal cords were concerned that her doctor discovered that one of her cords was paralyzed.
A follow-up scan indicated that she had numerous tumors in her neck, one of which was sitting on a nerve that was feeding her vocal cord, causing the paralysis. A biopsy established the diagnosis of papillary thyroid cancer. Despite no 13-year-old wanting to hear “You have cancer,” Brittany recalls feeling a sense of relief after having been through six months of medical appointments and tests. “I think there was some sense of ‘Okay, well, at least now we know what it is, so we can do something about it.’”
Brittany and her medical team decided that she would first undergo surgery to empty the impacted parts of her thyroid. In the surgery, nevertheless, the surgeon discovered that the cancer was not mainly on one side of her thyroid, as they had believed, though was much more comprehensive. The determination was made to remove her entire thyroid, in addition to many of the surrounding lymph nodes.
“I woke up from surgery and was told they were unable to salvage the nerve that was feeding my vocal cord because of how the tumor had wrapped around it.” Brittany was then informed that she would have permanent vocal cord stiffness and would not be able to speak naturally. Brittany started radioactive iodine (RAI) treatment to kill the remaining thyroid cells that might be cancerous. Due to RAI treatment causing people to be radioactive for a period of time, she had to be totally separated from her loved ones. Successfully, the treatment was prosperous. Scans revealed that Brittany did not have any detectable cancer in her body.
